The Sacred Heart Middle School Cougar football team closed out its undefeated 2008 season Monday with a 48-28 win over the Meade MS Buffaloes at Memorial Stadium.
The Cougars ran for more than 500 yards against the Buffs and capitalized on four turnovers on the way to their seventh win of the season. A Zach Kirby interception set up a Cougar drive that ended with a 14-yard Parker Davis rushing score with just over six minutes remaining in the opening frame.
An Aarin Tieben interception later in the quarter set up a drive capped by Ryan Lomas' 40-yard scamper to the end zone. After Davis' rush completed the Cougar two-point conversion, the score was 14-0 with 3:26 left in the first.
Meade's Trevin Wiens ran in from 60 yards out late in the first quarter to bring the score to 14-6 at the end of one. Lomas ran his second touchdown in from 8 yards with just over six minutes to play in the first half, which brought the score to 20-6.
Kirby recovered a Meade fumble on the ensuing drive, and Davis rewarded the effort with a breakaway touchdown run of 54 yards for the Cougars. Sacred Heart went into the locker room at halftime up 26-6.
After a third quarter with a considerably slower pace, Davis ran in from 38 yards away with just under a minute to play in the frame. Kirby ran the two-point try in to make the score 34-6 at the end of three.
The Buffaloes came back with two scores, one of which was a 65-yard pass from quarterback Chris Hardaway. After Davis' fourth touchdown run, this one of 57 yards, the Cougars were up comfortably by the score of 40-20.
Lomas ran in his third touchdown of the afternoon later in the fourth quarter from 31 yards away. Hardaway tossed another touchdown pass to bring the score to its final, 48-28.
Davis ended the game with 373 rush yards and four touchdowns. Lomas added three scores on 172 rush yards. Todd Van Degrift led the Cougars with 11 tackles.
Sacred Heart ended the season with a perfect 7-0 record and won the Jayhawk Middle School League of Kansas as well.
