Records are made to be broken. Sometimes, they get shattered.   Last Friday night in Wichita, while securing their first victory of the 2011 football season, the Dodge City High School Red Demons rewrote the record books behind a dominating offensive performance.
The offense amassed 691 total yards, a new school record that surpassed the 617 yard mark set by the Red Demons versus Junction City in 1994.  Of those yards, Parker Davis accounted for 326 yards on the ground to break the old rushing record of 305 yards by Jace Banner — set versus Topeka High in 2009. Davis, running through massive holes created by his offensive line — and, at times, through the arms of overmatched tacklers — also established a new school record for trips to the end zone.
Davis’ seven touchdowns and 42 total points for the contest were both record-breaking feats. The 42 points broke the old record of 31 points in a game set by Mike Montgomery in 1966.
The seven touchdowns erased a logjam of former players’ names who had recorded five touchdowns in a single game.
The junior running back did not break the record for carries, which in itself makes the aforementioned records even more impressive. The record for carries in a game still belongs to Jace Banner (2009) with 38.
Finally, sophomore kicker Dillon Burkhard continued his assault on the record books with his 9 extra points — tying his own record of 9 extra points in last year’s contest versus Goddard. Burkhard is already the season 58 and career 67 record holder for extra points.

Friday night vs. the Grizzlies
The Red Demons plan to extend their current nine-game home winning streak Friday night at Memorial Stadium versus the Grizzlies of Wichita Northwest.
The Red Demons have faced the Grizzlies 14 times in the storied history of both programs. The Red Demons first played the Grizzlies in 1981 with the Demons winning the inaugural contest by a score of 18-0, while Northwest won the last matchup between the teams (35-28), in 1997, before the renewing of the series last season. The overall series record has Dodge City with a (9-5) advantage. On six occasions the Demons and Grizzlies have met with a state playoff berth on the line. This year’s matchup is a non-district affair.
Northwest head coach Weston Schartz will be looking for his 150th career win versus the Demons on Friday night. Dodge City will be attempting to extend its current 12-game non-conference regular-season winning streak. This is the second of three consecutive contests for the Red Demons versus Wichita City League opponents.   Next Friday night, the Red Demons finish their City League run by travelling to play Wichita North.
