Dodge City Community College men's basketball head coach Brady Trenkle said this team would be a fun one to watch this year.
So far, his boys haven't disappointed.
The Conqs began their 2011-2012 season with a 3-0 record, defeating Tabor College at home 103-61. Then they traveled to the Sterling College tournament, where they took down God's Academy 74-51 and the Sterling junior varsity 91-45.
Leading the way for Dodge against God's Academy was high-flyer James Milton, who hit four of his nine shots for 13 total points and 16 rebounds.
Five Conq players hit the double-digit scoring mark, including Clarence Willard (11), Tyshon Pickett (11), RJ McGhee (10) and Tramel White (10).
God's Academy was out-rebounded by DC3 by 19 and Dodge City made 11 more baskets, despite attempting four fewer shots than their opponent.
The Conquistadors dominated in essentially every other aspect, dishing out 15 more assists, blocking eight more shots and stealing the rock seven more times.
It was more of the same for Dodge against the Sterling JV, with Tony Phillips exploding for 23 points on outstanding 10 of 11 shooting from the field. He also had eight rebounds and two blocks.
Only one other Conq scored more than nine points, as Greg Lee notched 11 and most of the regular starters got an early-season rest.
DCCC was red-hot from the floor, making 54 percent of its shots (39-72), and burying five of its 18 three-point attempts.
Once again, the Conqs cleaned up on the glass, grabbing 20 offensive rebounds, while the Warriors could only get five of its own.
Dodge manhandled Sterling in every statistical category, out-stealing them nine to three, outblocking them by 11 and, in perhaps the most lopsided stat of the night, assisted on 26 baskets while Sterling could only tally one.
The men will continue their season on Veterans Day as they travel to Sterling, Colo., to compete in another early-year tournament. They will take on Lamar Community College on Nov. 11 and finish up the road trip with a Nov. 12 matchup with Northwest Wyoming.
The Conqs will return home Nov. 18 for a rematch with Tabor College for the Conq Classic at United Wireless Arena.
