Take one look at the box score, and you'll see a Dodge City Community College football squad that had more first downs than Butler Community College and was penalized for 76 fewer yards.
But the one stat that matters the most fell in Butler's favor — the score.
Butler used a slew of big plays to knock the Conqs out of the playoffs, winning 59-10 Sunday afternoon in El Dorado.
One area that has changed the tide in games for Dodge has been the Conqs' ability to run the ball efficiently, using the combination of Robert McWright and quarterback Bryan Parnes running the zone read option.
On Sunday, that run game was shut down.
McWright led the way for the Conqs on the ground, carrying the ball 16 times for 28 yards, a 1.75-yards-per-rush average.
Other DC3 rushers included Cameron Hall (three carries for three yards), Logan Stephens (two carries for two yards), Parnes (five carries for -11 yards) and Aaron Hansen (eight carries for -17 yards).
Together, the entire Conquistador squad managed five yards rushing on 34 total carries, effectively making them a one-dimensional ballclub throughout the entire game.
Due to the fact that the Conqs could not run the ball effectively, and that they accumulated seven turnovers, Butler was able to jump out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter.
A Stephens 28-yard field goal cut the deficit to 21-3, but Butler would score the next 24 points, including a 97-yard pass to put the nails in the coffin.
Through the air, the Conqs were led by Hansen, who came in to replace the starter Parnes when the score became out of reach. He chucked the ball 39 times, completing 20 of them for 184 yards and one touchdown to Stephens, but was also intercepted three times.
Parnes managed to go 13 of 31 for 157 yards and two interceptions during his time behind center.
Once again, Stephens was able to lead Dodge receivers, hauling in nine passes for 116 yards and the lone Conq touchdown. Evan Loomis didn't finish too far behind, catch seven balls for 107 yards, giving the team two 100-yard receivers.
Defensively, Shawn Smith and Weston Coomes were able to intercept two Butler passes, with Coomes returning his 35 yards. Chris Lipscomb had four solo tackles and the lone fumble recovery for the team.
The Conqs end their season 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference. This season marked the first time Dodge had made the regional playoffs since 2005 and the first time they took down Garden City since 1986.
