Even though it seems as if the basketball season for the Dodge City Community College men's and women's programs began just the other day, both teams have reached the 10-game mark and experienced success on and off the court.
Both squads made their impact felt off the court before the season started by participating in community volunteer work. The women helped grade school kids with their reading ability, and the men hosted a basketball camp for over 100 kids from kindergarten to sixth grade.
Those experiences have translated to success on the court, as the men currently sit at 8-1. They will face off with the York College JV team at 7 p.m. tonight at the Civic Center.
As for the women, they are coming off their best defensive performance of the season as they traveled to Bartlesville, Okla., Tuesday and shut down Oklahoma Wesleyan University, 59-31. The 31 points allowed is a season-low for the Lady Conqs and first-year head coach Lucas McDonald.
With the victory, the Lady Conqs improve their overall record to 6-4 and are on the right path as the Jayhawk Conference schedule approaches in January.
While the men continue winning, their success has not gone unnoticed by the pollsters. In the most recent National Junior College Athletic Association men's basketball poll (Nov. 29), the Conqs received a few votes, moving them closer to the top 25.
They are one of eight Region VI teams that are either ranked or receiving votes, making the region one of the most difficult in the nation.
Both teams are in action this weekend, but once the men play tonight at the Civic Center, both teams will not have a home contest until the first week of January.
