On an overcast, wet Sunday afternoon, the Dodge City Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams took on visiting Allen County, looking to finish the season strong despite shaky beginnings.
For the women, Las Vegas freshman Lety Ibarra netted two goals as the Lady Conqs defeated the Lady Red Devils 2-1 to improve their record to 5-8.
Ibarra continued her incredible season on Sunday by carrying the offense for DC3, proving that she belongs as one of the conference’s best players.
“She is a game changer,” said head coach Tim Romanello. “She has a ton of speed, her skill is unbelievable. When she’s tenacious, she is absolutely on and in my opinion she is the second best, if not the best player in our conference.”
The Lady Conqs are now 4-5 in the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference, which places them tied for seventh in the regional standings.
On the men’s side, Dodge City dominated for 45 minutes and walked away with a gritty 2-0 victory.
The Conquistadors scored both goals in the first half, including one from Mikhail Kooh, who missed a majority of the beginning of the season. Kooh has come on strong as of late, netting two against Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and one on Sunday afternoon.
Even though the win only improves the men's record to 4-8-2, it wasn’t apparent in their determination and drive this weekend.
“What you’re starting to see out there in these past two home games is our ability to play with a lot of intensity,” Romanello said. “Now we’re finding our comfort zone at home, we’re understanding how the turf plays, we know how to respond to that. Now we’re starting to see a group of guys that will hopefully believe in each other and find that intensity.”
Romanello said while his team might be on the outside looking in at the regional standings, his team can still save face by playing together and “rowing forward.”
“To borrow a quote from a friend back home, it’s all about rowing foward,” Romanello said. “How many guys can we fit in this big ship that we have right now with what we’re trying to accomplish and carry an oar for and say we’re going to row in the same direction?”
One thing that bodes well for the Conqs is that the team is 3-3 inside the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium — three out of their final four contests will be played in Dodge.
Up next for both the men and the women is a date with Neosho County on Wednesday.
