A defensive shutdown of Manhattan High School's 3-point arsenal in the second quarter Saturday night proved to be the difference for the Dodge City Red Demons.
Dodge City used a 13-7 second-quarter burst to bolt to a 31-20 halftime lead and rolled to a 60-49 victory over the Indians at the DCHS Field House.
One day removed from hitting a game-winning floating basket against No. 5-ranked Salina Central, sophomore guard Rico Hogan scored a game-high 18 points and dished out three assists, leading a trio of Demons in double figures.
"Rico had a great line," said Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton, glancing at the statistics sheet in the aftermath. "He shot the ball pretty well (4-for-11 on field goals, including 3-for-8 on 3-pointers), got four rebounds and had three assists."
Hogan was the only player in double figures in a cliff-hanging 47-46 win over Salina Central on Friday, scoring 14 points but making only 5-of-18 field goals.
Hogan shot at a higher percentage against Manhattan, and he also had more help in the scoring column.
Forward Landon Head added 16 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Demons (2-0). Post player Miles Morin added 11 points and team-most eight rebounds against the undersized Tribe (0-2), coached by former DCHS assistant Tim Brooks.
