The Dodge City High School cross-country squad ended a magical season Saturday, finishing seventh in the 6A state competition at the Rim Rock course in Lawrence.
It was a course the Demons had competed at earlier in the season and, while it didn’t equate to a state title, it doesn’t take away from the conference and regional championships the boys won on their way to state.
Leading the way for DCHS were the team’s workhorses, Oscar and Luis Carmona, who have consistently been the foundation for the success of the Demons this season.
Oscar finished 26th overall in a time of 16:46 with brother Luis close on his heels, finishing in 27th with a time of 16:47.
The other remaining five finishers for Dodge include Layne Moe (56th - 17:27), Anthony Carmona (64th - 17:36), Elder Colindres (73rd - 17:47), Jonathan Rendon (89th - 18:17) and Austin Tiemeyer (90th - 18:18).
Shawnee Mission South took the overall team title with 81 points, while Shawnee Mission Northwest and Blue Valley West tied for second with 91 team points. Rounding out the team standings were Shawnee Mission West (4th - 101), Wichita North (5th - 137), Maize (6th - 142), Dodge City (7th - 172), Campus (8th - 189), Olathe East (9th - 210), Manhattan (10th - 230), Wichita South (11th - 254) and Blue Valley Northwest (12th - 289).
For Demons head coach Buc Bolmer, it was an excellent season, even though it didn't end with the team title trophy.
“I thought the boys ran extremely well,” Bolmer said. “I know they are disappointed with a seventh-place finish, but they all bettered their times and had a great season. I am proud of all of them — they ran with heart this year.”
In other tidbits from the Saturday's race, the Demons beat all the teams in their regional, just as they did during the regional race on Oct. 22. Dodge also finished better than Manhattan, which beat out DCHS in Salina for the team title.
