You had to like the defensive intensity the Dodge City Community College men's basketball team displayed Thursday night against the York (Neb.) College junior varsity.
Sure, it was a JV team, but sometimes a team’s intensity level drops like a thermometer when playing a lesser opponent.
The Conquistadors' on-ball pressure induced 15 first-half turnovers and this one got out of hand in a hurry. DCCC bolted to a 58-24 halftime lead and won going away, 104-61, at the Civic Center.
In all, outmanned York committed 23 turnovers.
“I preach to these guys all day about that,” DCCC coach Brady Trenkle said. “Last year, we only gave up 65 points a game and scored 64.
“If we can get a 65 average this season, we’re going to win a lot of ballgames.”
Dodge City (2-0) had its fun against the York JV, but the task gets a lot tougher on Tuesday, when the Conqs entertain Lamar at 7:30 p.m.
Lamar was an NJCAA national tournament team last season.
“Those kinds of game, I don’t really like,” Trenkle said of the rout of  the York. “I don’t think we played as well as we did the other night. We’ve got to get healthy.”
Lamar is coached by Chris Tifft, a former Dodge City High School basketball player and former assistant coach at DCCC for two seasons.
“I’m going to find out on Tuesday who can really step it up and do some things,” Trenkle said. “Because Lamar comes in and they’ll be ripping and roaring and ready to go.’
Chuck Coley, a 6-8 sophomore, had 14 points and 10 rebounds, one of six Conqs in double-digit scoring.
Forward Derrick Parsley added 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting and 2-of-6 free throws. He has made 15 of 17 shots from the floor after two games.
Shooting guard Jordan Wilcox hit 5-of-9 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 15 points. For the complete story go to   http://dodgecitydailyglobe.ks.newsmemory.com/
