By 10 on Saturday night, the Dodge City High School football coaches had already headed to the office to break down the game film from Friday's Wichita Northwest-Derby game.
No time to bask in the glow of Dodge City's first Class 6A state playoff victory in 15 years, a 35-14 win over Topeka High. No time to relish the first berth in the second round since beating Junction City 55-22 back in 1994.
Derby (7-3), which beat Wichita Northwest 24-14 last Friday night, hosts the Red Demons (8-2) in a second-round playoff game Friday night at 7.
"We left the film room a little bit before 1 a.m. (Sunday morning)," Dodge City coach Justin Burke said. "We watched the film (on Monday from the Topeka High game) to see what we can improve.
"When you win a ball game, the kids always want to see the film. But we've already turned the page. We turned the page back and looked at the Topeka High film.”
There's not enough time to dwell on the past, even though senior tailback Jace Banner rushed for a surreal school-record 305 yards in 38 carries during the conquest of the Trojans — even though the Demons put it all together on this night.
Now, it's time to get ready to do it again.
"After the season, we can reflect on that," said Burke of clearing a major stumbling block in advancing to the second round. "We can't do that right now. We're flipping the page and concentrating on Derby and trying to get another win."
Ironically, back in 1994, Dodge City lost to none other than Derby in the second round of the playoffs, 19-0.
But that game isn't even in the Demons' vocabulary. After all, the current players were all toddlers when the Demons lost to Derby in that game so long ago.
Dodge's defense had another rock-solid game as they harried Topeka city passing leader Sam Johnson into 13-for-25 passing for only 142 yards.
"I thought our defense really hooked up again," Burke said. "(The Trojans) scored two touchdowns, but one came off on a kickoff return (a 93-yarder by the Trojans' Cody Harrison).
"To hold that offense to one touchdown ... I think they scored over 20 points in every game of the year and probably averaged closer to the 30- to 40-point range."
