DODGE CITY —

Both Dodge City Middle School Cardinal football teams fell in their matchups with the Guymon, Okla. Tigers. The seventh-graders fell 22-12, and the eighth-grade team fell 20-16 at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinal seventh-graders battled back after giving up an early touchdown reception by Guymon's Guillermo Valenzuela. With six minutes, 18 seconds left in the first half, Cardinal running back Dominic Randall ran in from 14 yards out to tie the score at 6.
Right before halftime, though, Valenzuela gave the lead back to the boys from Oklahoma with a 43-yard touchdown run. The score at the half was 14-6 Tigers.
Guymon scored on its first drive of the second half on a 40-yard Seth Sanders touchdown run. The two-point conversion was successful and with 6:07 to play in the third quarter, the score was 22-6.
As the quarter wound down, the Cardinals tried to mount a comeback with a touchdown pass from Kelann Newton to Randall, but the Tiger defense held in the fourth quarter and the final score was 22-12 in favor of the Tigers.
The eighth-grade Cardinals found themselves in the hole as well when the Tigers broke the ice in the middle of the second quarter on an eight-yard touchdown run by Aaron Costilla. The two-point conversion gave the Tigers an 8-0 lead.
But as halftime approached and Guymon was pinned back near its own goal line, Costilla fumbled the ball in his own end zone and Dodge City's Corey Keller fell on the ball for a crucial defensive touchdown. The score at half was tied at 8.
The Tigers came out of halftime strong, though, and scored the first two touchdowns of the second half. Costilla ran for both of the scores that put the game out of the Cardinals' reach.
Dodge City's David Quigley ran in a two-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score, 20-16 in favor of Guymon. Both Cardinal football teams travel to Great Bend Thursday for their next games.
