The Dodge City soccer team kicked off its season by defeating Wichita South 3-1 on Thursday.
“We are continuously giving the message to take it one game at a time,” DCHS head coach Virgil Hutchcraft said. “To tell you the truth, South came out harder than we thought. I told the guys, ‘We have an X on our back because we went to state.’
“It is Important to win the first one and I hope we can build some momentum in the Titan Classic as well.”
First-half goals by Carlos Luna and Armando Hipolito helped give the Red Demons an early 2-0 lead going into halftime.
In the 59th minute, Vicente Estrella gave Dodge City a commanding 3-0 lead.
Wichita South avoided the shutout by scoring in the final minute of the game.
The Red Demons will be back on the Wichita South campus on Monday to start the Titan Classic soccer tournament.
The Demons will play its first home game on Sept. 21 against Garden City.
The junior varsity team won its game 9-1 with Mark Adame scoring twice. The JV squad went up 6-0 before allowing Wichita South to score on a penalty kick.
