The Dodge City High School Red Demons’ Class 6A state football playoff game with Topeka High School at Memorial Stadium has been moved from Friday to Saturday at 6 p.m. to accommodate the visiting team.
Over the weekend, Topeka High appealed to the Kansas State High School Activities Association about moving the game from Friday until Saturday, in accordance to a rule in the KSHSAA handbook regarding
teams traveling more than 150 miles and having the option to move the game back one day, providing it’s not a weekday.
Topeka High also sought a 1:30 p.m. kickoff on Saturday, but Dodge City preferred to play at night and settled for a 6 p.m. kickoff at Memorial Stadium.
The Saturday game was not something Dodge City officials
preferred, according to DCHS athletics director Jay Gifford, and they did not want a day game with other activities already planned.
“We feel it is in the best interests of our fans, students and the community to play the game at night,” Gifford said.
DCHS coach Justin Burke said that he’s just glad the Red Demons are in the playoffs. It is their second straight trip to the playoffs.
The Demons (7-2) won all three of their Class 6A District 8 games, clinching the district outright, along with a first-round home playoff berth.
A win over Topeka High (6-3) would put the Demons in a second-round game on Friday, Nov. 13, against either Wichita Northwest (7-2) or Derby (6-3), who meet Friday night.
Burke said the downside on playing on Saturday is that the team that advances to the second round to play the Dodge City-Topeka winner gets one more preparation day.
“I’m sure whoever wins that game, they will be in Dodge City on Saturday watching the game in person,” Burke said.
