After experiencing a 2-0 setback against Neosho County last week, the Dodge City Community College women’s soccer team needed two victories in their final three matches to assure themselves a berth in the regional tournament.
Mission accomplished.
The Lady Conqs got a superhero effort from freshman Lety Ibarra over the weekend in a 2-0 win over Hesston and a 10-1 road thrashing of Independence. In those games, Ibarra tallied six goals, including five in the game against Independence.
Also chipping in for DC3 was Amanda Carney, netting a goal against Hesston and two more against Independence.
Rounding out the scoring for the Conqs against Independence was Rosie Botello, Carina Perez, and Alex Medina.
With those two victories, the Lady Conqs lock up at least an eight seed in the regional tournament, but currently sit tied for sixth in the region with Garden City.
As for the men, they continue to make the most out of the end of their season with victories over Hesston and Independence by scores of 7-0 and 6-1.
Leading the way for the Conqs in the Hesston beatdown was Victor Millan and Alberto Checa, scoring two goals each. Marcos Moreno, Mikhail Kooh and Manny Mondestin also put the ball into the back of the net for Dodge.
In the Independence matchup, Checa added two more goals to his season total, with other goal scorers including Moreno, Millan, Chris Sargeant, Alan Rojas and Mitch Higgins.
With this late season surge, the men’s squad is currently tied for seventh in both the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference and in the region.
After the action this weekend, the women’s side is at 7-9 overall, while the men sit at 7-8-2 during their current four-game winning streak.
Next up for both squads is a their final home regular season contest against Johnson County on Oct. 19 at 5 and 7:15 p.m.
