The Dodge City Community College football team couldn’t overcome their mistakes on Saturday at Memorial Stadium, as they dropped a conference contest to Fort Scott 40-22.
The Conqs turned the ball over six times, including three interceptions that were returned for touchdowns in the second half, to deflate any chances of a victory at home.
Sophomore quarterback Bryan Parnes began the scoring for the game, plunging in for one-yard to give DC3 a 7-0 first quarter lead.
After a blocked Fort Scott punt set Dodge up with good field position, freshman running back Robert McWright was close to punching it in before a Greyhound defender knocked the ball loose, turning the ball over inside the five.
It would be a story of what could have been for the Conqs.
Dodge City would fail to score on their next couple of drives and Fort Scott finally capitalized on a 27-yard touchdown to tie the game up at seven at the half.
As the second half began, it was more of the same for the Conq offense, turning the ball over deep in Greyhound territory
But the defense would once again hold strong.
Fort Scott, attempting to run out of their own end zone, was stuffed behind their goal line for a safety to recapture the lead 9-7.
McWright would continue his big day on the ground on the next drive for Dodge, bursting up the middle, shedding Greyhound defenders for a 35-yard touchdown run. The freshman would finish with 197 yards on 31 carries and that touchdown.
With the momentum on Dodge’s side, up 15-7, the wheels started to fall off the bus thanks to what would be a bizarre turn of events for the Conq offense and Parnes.
A Greyhound touchdown pass would bring the visitors closer, but the Conqs still had the lead.
Within a span of ten minutes, from the end of the third quarter to midway through the fourth, Parnes would be intercepted three times, with each of them being returned for a touchdown, essentially sealing the game for the Greyhounds. The interception returns (63, 75 and 100 yards) totalled 238 yards.
Those defensive touchdowns gave Fort Scott the lead 33-15. A touchdown pass from backup quarterback Aaron Hansen to Logan Stephens cut into the deficit 33-22, but that’s as close as it would get.
A late Greyhound touchdown ended the game and left the Conq coaching staff and players bewildered, knowing this was a game they had in the palm of their hands.
The DC3 offense had no problem moving the ball, gaining 576 total yards, but three fumbles and three interceptions extinguished those potential scoring drives.
Leading the way on defense for the Conqs was Chris Lipscomb, totalling 11.5 tackles and one blocked kick. Sophomore John Goetz had a solid day defensively, racking up 9.5 tackles, including a fumble recovery and a sack.
The loss drops Dodge City to 2-5 overall, denting their chances at making the regional field.
Next up for the Conqs is a home meeting against Garden City Community College Sat., Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
