As the sun went down behind the Memorial Stadium bleachers, the wind cast a chill upon the pitch as the Dodge City Community College men's soccer team attempted to turn the heat up on visiting Neosho County.
The teams, in an attempt to use the blustery conditions to their advantage, choose which end of the field to occupy first, rather than who got the ball.
Just as in the women's game a short while earlier, the Conqs were forced to play into the steady headwind first.
Possession was the name of the game early on for DC3, to keep it below the wind and out of reach of Neosho's pouncing forwards.
Dodge City was able, for the most part, to disallow any form of Panther attack through the air as they would attempt to use the wind to aid in passing.
The Conquistadors had very few scoring chances in the first 45 minutes, sending wild shots in at the Panther goalkeeper, mostly above the crossbar of the field goal posts that sit above the goals at Memorial Stadium.
The lone major scoring chance for Dodge happened with under ten minutes to play in the first half, as a cross from Junior Cruz caught the goaltender off guard, bouncing over his head. From there a Conquistador forward kicked it back toward the front of the goal where Marcos Moreno hammered it into the back of the net.
The line judge's flag signaling offsides said otherwise.
At the half the two squads went into the lockers tied 0-0.
Dodge City used the wind to their advantage in the second half, connecting on two goals by Javier Rojas and David Delgado. Alan Rojas assisted on the Delgado goal.
With the 2-0 victory against the Panthers, the men's squad is now on a two-game winning streak and has an overall record of 5-8-2.
The Conqs will take the field again Friday night as they take on visiting Hesston.
