For Youthville officials, Friday marked a milestone in the history of the agency's Dodge City campus.
Officials and residents gathered to break ground for a new building on the Dodge City campus, next to the central purchasing area. The building will include a kitchen and dining area, a storm shelter built to federal standards, four classrooms and office space.
The building will allow the Dodge City campus to expand meal service, creating an environment where residents can learn to socialize in large groups, said President and CEO Shelley Duncan. She said the storm shelter will ensure safety for residents and staffers, and the additional classrooms will reduce overcrowding at the campus school.
In addition, a special room will give residents a supervised, quiet space to go when they feel overwhelmed.
"This project is important not only to our kids, but to the other children that don't live here but go to school here," Duncan said in a short interview after the ceremony. "I think that will be great for the schools, the staff and the children."
