Spearville High School girls’ basketball coach Lorie Stein formerly played at now-defunct St. Mary’s of the Plains in Dodge City after starring for Thomas More Prep-Marian in Hays.
Stein never got a chance to play in a state tournament, her high school team losing in a sub-state final.
Under Stein’s guidance, Spearville, after a 20-year absence, is back in the state tournament. The Lancers (20-3) play an opening-round Class 2A state tournament game tonight at 8:15 against third-seeded Osborne (18-5).
“A lot of work goes into this,” Stein said, “and you reap what you sew. Of course, you have to have a little bit of luck along the way.
“What I learned from playing in college is that it takes a lot of hard work. If you put in the work, you’ll reap the awards.”
The Big 3 for the Lancers are post players Becca Hornung-Heeke, Megan Stein and Elle Stein (Lorie Stein’s daughters).
Hornung-Heeke is averaging around 14 points and seven rebounds.
Megan Stein is averaging 13 points and eight rebounds, and Elle Stein is averaging 11 points and a team-leading nine rebounds.
Yet the Lancers need to have more than the Big 3 on the big stage.
“I think our guards played very intense (in a 57-30 win over Syracuse in the sub-state title game,” Lorie Stein said. “They wanted to be part of the reason why we’re winning.
“They looked to shoot and they weren’t afraid to shoot. That’s the key.”
