The Sacred Heart Middle School Cougars football team continued its holy roll Tuesday against the Garden City Kenneth Henderson eighth-grade junior varsity team by winning at Memorial Stadium 52-0. The Cougars improved their record to 5-0 with the win.
Running back Parker Davis and the Sacred Heart offensive line set the tone for the game midway through the first quarter, as Davis ripped through the Henderson defense for a 48-yard touchdown run. After a short Kenneth Henderson drive stalled, Davis returned the ensuing punt with 4:47 from 73 yards out for his second touchdown of the game.
Quarterback Zach Kirby gave Parker a first-quarter hat trick late in the first on a 53-yard catch and run for a touchdown that put the Cougars up 20-0 at the end of one.
After an Arrin Tieben interception deep in Kenneth Henderson territory at the beginning of the second quarter, Kirby threw his second touchdown of the night, this one a 10-yarder, to Austin Weiser. Ryan Lomas ran in the two-point conversion to make the score 28-0.
Davis scored another special teams touchdown, his second punt return of 70 or more yards for the game, midway through the quarter. Kirby ran in the two-point conversion that made the score 36-0.
Before the halftime whistle, Lomas wore out the Henderson defense on a 36-yard touchdown run up the gut and handled the conversion as well. The score at halftime was 44-0.
In the second half, Cougar linemen became ball carriers, and the team managed one more touchdown that capped off the fifth straight win of the 2008 Cougar football season. With time ticking down in the fourth quarter, Dylan Vogel cashed in a three-yard touchdown scamper and Justin Gemaehlich ran in the two-point conversion.
Kirby finished the evening by completing three-of-four passes for two touchdowns and 63 yards through the air. He recorded seven tackles in the defensive backfield as well.
Davis led the team in tackling, with 10 total on the night. Vogel and Todd Van Degrift had six tackles each.
The Sacred Heart Cougars football team will play again at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Stadium against Larned.
