This week, the South Gray High School boys’ basketball team is vying for a third Class 1A state championship in the last four years.
The Rebels won back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008, and lost to Quinter in the opening round last season.
“I want to get past that first round,” South Gray’s Bligh Schulte said. “ I don’t want to lose there again. We need to keep up playing hard.
"We are going to have to watch out for nerves to get past that first game.”
The Rebels will see its first action today, playing Macksville in the quarterfinals at 4:45 p.m. at Gross Memorial Coliseum on the Fort Hays State campus in Hays.
After going 24-1, losing only to Spearville, the No. 1-ranked Class 2A team, the Rebels have received the No. 4 seed at the tournament.
“There was a three-way tie for second place and the way state does it, they flip a coin and we came in fourth,” South Gray head coach Mark Applegate said. “I don’t think there is any advantage or disadvantage (on seeding), when you look at records. Every team has a 20-plus win season, it does not matter where you are at.”
South Gray defeated Spearville the second time they played them, in the championship game of the SPIAA tournamentt as the Lancers’ 6-foot-10 Willie Cauley was out of the lineup, serving a one-game suspension
Macksville, the five seed, is 21-3 overall, losing two of its games to Pratt, the No. 5-ranked 4A team. The other loss was to Hoisington.
South Gray is ranked No. 2 and Macksville is No. 3 in the final KBCA poll.
Macksville’s Kyle Bunker has averaged 13.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game this season, according to Maxpreps.com. Both are team highs.
South Gray comes into the game after a 58-50 victory over Ashland in the sub-state finals on Saturday at Larned. The Mustangs enter the game after defeating Quivira Heights Saturday in a sub-state championship Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center, 46-44.
“They got a good inside game and have some good guards go to with them,” Applegate said. “They move well and rebound well and are well coached team. It is going to be a good game and that is what it should be.”
