The Dodge City Middle School Cardinal football teams both finished their seasons Thursday with matches against schools from Liberal. The seventh-graders lost to Liberal South 45-20, while the eighth-grade team beat Liberal West 36-14.
Two Jordan Doan rushing scores in the first quarter put DCMS up 16-0 quickly at the end of the frame, and eighth-grade Cardinal quarterback Taylor Murphy threw three touchdown passes in the second quarter that put the home team up 36-0 before the halftime whistle blew.
Two of Murphy's tosses went to Giovanni Mendoza, and the nail in the Liberal South coffin came with nine seconds left in the half, when Murphy aired one out 20 yards to Dakota Fisher, which would be all the team needed to get the win.
The Cardinals coasted and gave up two scores in the second half to win the game 36-14.
The seventh-grade contest was back-and-forth in the first quarter, but Liberal South put the moves on the Cardinal sevvies in the final three.
Cardinal running back Dominic Randall carried one in from 61 yards out to get the score to get his team within two points at 8-6, but that was as close as the game would get.
Running back Austin Savage ran in from one yard out late in the third quarter to bring the score to 32-14, and a Kelan Newton run with just under four minutes to go in the fourth made the score 39-20 in favor is the visitors. But a final touchdown from Liberal South's Dylan Berens put the score at 45-20.
