Both Dodge City Middle School Cardinal football teams came out victorious in their butter-knife games against squads from Garden City Abe Hubert MS. The seventh-graders won 14-0, while the 8th grade Cardinals busted the Hawks up 38-8.
Cardinal running back Jordan Doan ran all over the Hawk defense in the eighth-grade game. With help from blockers David Quigley, Bryce Sonday and Zackary Boyd, Doan totaled 266 yards on the ground for the Cardinals after the dust settled on Memorial Stadium on only 20 carries.
A first-quarter touchdown toss from Taylor Murphy to receiver Dakota Fisher put the Cardinals up 8-0 at the end of the frame. With 6 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first half, Doan scorched the Hawk defense for a 52-yard touchdown run.
Quigley ran the two-point conversion in to make the score 16-0. On the next Cardinal drive, Doan ate up what was left of the second quarter before Quigley cashed in a one-yard touchdown run that put the Redbirds up 22.
Cardinal defensive back Giovanni Mendoza intercepted an Isaiah Salinas pass just before half. After taking a knee, Murphy and his Cardinals took their 22-point lead into halftime. The second half proved to be similar to the first.
Doan reared his head early, taking a 20-yard run to the house with six minutes left in the third quarter. After the Hawks took over on the ensuing kickoff, Dustin Blevins stole another errant Salinas pass and carried it back to said house after only 11 seconds had ticked off the game clock.
The score after another Quigley two-point conversion was 38-0 and the rout was on. The Hawks added a rushing score in the fourth quarter to make the final score 38-8.
Seventh-grade Cardinal running back Dominic Randall ran in a score for his team before quarterback Kelan Newton threw a touchdown pass to Andrew Balderaz for the score that sealed the deal for the Dodge sevvies. The final was 14-0.
