Salina —

A former volunteer firefighter in Saline County is sentenced to two years of supervised probation for setting three grass fires, one of which got close to a school.
Eighteen-year-old Michael A. Russell, of Gypsum, received a suspended prison sentence of one year on each of three felony counts of arson. He was accused of burning about 130 acres in April.
Saline County Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said Russell was among firefighters at all three blazes for Rural Fire District No. 1. Other firefighters became suspicious because Russell arrived at the station quickly when the calls came in or he was the one calling in the fires.
