One of the eight wonders of Kansas is coming alive again, and this time bigger and better.
After surrendering to a devastating tornado on May 4, 2007, The Big Well museum in Greensburg is not only recovering but coming back with a new face.
According to the Big Well's Facebook page, the Greensburg City Council approved proceedings for construction on Aug. 22. City officials have set aside $3 million from insurance proceedings and state and federal grants.
Construction for the new building will begin at 10 a.m. Monday with a groundbreaking ceremony, and officials hope for a grand opening in May 2012.
The new museum will feature various exhibits on the history of Greensburg, including digging the Big Well, the tornado and rebuilding the town. Visitors will still be able to take tours inside the well.
Prior to the tornado, The Big Well museum and gift shop resided in a humble building on site. Now, the vision is much greater.
The new museum is being designed by a high-profile design team that includes Ralph Appelbaum Associates Inc. of New York.
This leaves no doubt that The Big Well is well on its way to becoming a world-class museum.
