Chaos reigned in the streets of Dodge City Saturday, after the peace of a summer afternoon was shattered by sudden gun fire.
Street brawling, fistfights and general anarchy swept the length of Front Streets, as residents, sheriff's deputies, can-can girls, a gang of visiting robbers and six Texas Rangers slugged it out in one battle after another.
When the dust finally settled, our Marshall lay dead in the street and our can-can girls were soaking wet -— but the criminals had their just deserts, and the Texas Rangers will think twice before bounty hunting in Dodge City again.
It all started shortly after noon when two sheriff's deputies appeared on the western end of Front Street, carrying the city treasury's strongbox. A woman approached the lawmen as they neared Zimmerman's store and flirted with them for just a few seconds.
Unfortunately, a few seconds was all the time it took for a shotgun to appear from beneath the folds of the woman's dress, forcing the deputies to hand over the strong box to the accomplice who had suddenly materialized. In the same instant, another assailant leaped off a nearby horse tie and joined a fourth member of the gang in beating up the deputies. Their partner tossed the dress aside, revealing himself to be no lady - just another bad guy looking for trouble in all the wrong places.
Now unencumbered by his gown, the robber grabbed the strongbox from his partner in crime and shot the lock off while the rest of the gang watched eagerly. But the only thing the crooks pulled out of the box was a large pair of men's underwear. Two townspeople who had sought refuge under the sidewalk tried to muffle their laughter as the furious bad guys blamed one another for the humiliation of the underwear fiasco.
