    Eugene A. Gurtner, 85, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Presbyterian Manor of the Plains in Dodge City.
    He was born Nov. 27, 1922, in Dodge City to Earnest A. and Florence (Reudy) Gurtner.  He married Doris C. Hill on Dec. 8, 1955, in Dodge City.She survives.
    Mr. Gurtner spent his childhood in Kingman and Kim, Colo., until moving to Dodge City. He graduated from Dodge City High School, Dodge City Community College and Kansas State University.
    He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps and then the Army National Guard. Mr. Gurtner was a self-employed architect for 53 years at Gurtner & Robison Architect and retired in 2003.
    He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, St. Bernard Lodge #222 AF & AM, Salvation Army, Boot Hill Museum, Rotary Club and Jaycees, all of Dodge City, along with the American Institute of Architects.
    Other survivors include one son, Scott Gurtner and wife, Amy, Dodge City; one daughter, Kristin Markel and husband, Charles, Dodge City; three granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson, Jonathan Markel.
    The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Swaim Funeral Home in Dodge City, with the Rev. Lance Carrithers presiding. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City.
    Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Swaim Funeral Home, Dodge City.
