With nearly 100 Lancer fans in the stands, Spearville's softball team played an excellent defensive game before succumbing to St. Mary's in a 4-0 loss at the 2A-1A state softball tournament at Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.
The Lady Lancers went into the tournament with a 19-2 record following their win at the regional tournament. Shelby Durler had a hit in the third inning, and Shelly Heinz hit one in the fourth inning, but the game remained scoreless.
Taylor Fleener had a hit in the fifth inning, but St. Mary's pulled ahead with a run. They followed up with two runs in the sixth and closed out the game with one run in the seventh.
Spearville coach Casey Rynerson liked his players' defensive efforts.
“Defensively, we played the best game we've played all year,” Rynerson said. “We made some spectacular defensive plays.”
Rynerson was also pleased with the overall season.
“I think we had a great season,” he said. “These girls far exceeded many people's expectations. (The tournament) was a great experience for them. We're a very young team so hopefully in the next few years, we'll get up there again.
The support of the fans was greatly appreciated by the team.
“It was pretty spectacular to see all the fans out there,” Rynerson said. “We were by far the best-supported team.”
