     Kirby Van Berends, 86, died Thursday, May 29, 2008, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.
    He was born April 18, 1922, to Ephriam (Joe) and Leona DeSpain Berends at the family farm in Beaver County, Okla., southwest of Englewood. He married Katherine Salene Miller on Nov. 3, 1941, at Mulvane.  She survives.
    He attended Crooked Creek Country School in Beaver County and graduated from Englewood High School in 1941.
    He was a farmer and stockman and an Englewood school bus driver. He served on the Englewood Fire Department and t he Englewood City Council and was mayor for several years.
    He was a member of the Englewood Lions Club and the First Christian Church of Englewood.
    Survivors include two daughters, Carol Woodruff, Englewood, and Sandra Purinton, WaKeeney; four sisters, Florence Whisenhunt, Oklahoma City, Hazel Smith, Slapout, Okla., Audrey Hink, Weatherford, Okla., and Lela Herrington, Buffalo, Okla.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Clarence, Coy, Joe and Elmer Berends; and two sisters, Vera Andersen and Ivy Birch.
    The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, Englewood, with the Rev. Vic Peterson and Jerry Ediger presiding. Burial will be in the Englewood Cemetery.
    Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Myatt Funeral Home, Ashland.
