The Dodge High Red Demon girls track team successfully defended its Class 6A regional championship Friday at a meet hosted by Wichita Northwest High School.
The two regional titles are the only regional championships on the girls’ side in the history of the program. And the second championship was captured with relative ease.
Dodge City’s 130 points at the meet were second to none, and Maize was the only other team to get into triple digits, scoring 108 for second place.
“It was a good day out there,” said DCHS track and field coach Justin Burke in between photo opps. “And we were able to do it without one of our stars.”
Sprinter DaShonda Johnson was injured after hitting the seventh hurdle in the 100-meter hurdles. She still managed to win the race.
“She was looking great,” Burke added. “And the team really stepped up.”
One Demon in particular stepped up on the big stage Friday. Sprinter and relay runner Courtney Brady zoomed to two individual regional titles in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and won another with the 4x100-meter relay team.
“That was just an outstanding performance from Courtney Brady,” Burke said. “But everybody got in there and contributed.”
Other individual champions form Dodge City included Lauren Marshall in the pole vault and Sophie Shaull in the triple jump. Ten Demons on the girls’ side (including relay team members) placed in the top four slots of their event to qualify for the state championship next week.
On the boys’ side, the hosting Northwest Grizzlies took the team title away from Dodge City, which had won three straight regional titles coming into the meet. They edged the Maize Eagles by just four points, and the two schools eclipsed third-place Dodge City and the rest of the field by more than 60 points.
The Demons will send eight athletes to state this year after nabbing one regional title in the 100-meter dash. Senior Shane Graves followed up his Western Athletic Conference title with another win in the regional event as well.
“Graves had a really good day,” Burke said. “And our 4x4[00-meter relay team] looked pretty solid. Plus we had some throws that were pretty competitive as well.”
With the regional meet out of the way, the Demons will have to refocus one last time before returning to Wichita next week for the Class 6A state meet. The event will be held Friday and Saturday, May 29-30 at Wichita State’s Cessna Stadium.
