Freshman Morgan Hood scored 26 points as the No. 8 ranked Class 1A Division II Bucklin High School girls’ basketball team defeated Minneola 47-39 in the Southern Plains Iroquois Activities Association tournament quarterfinals Monday at the Civic Center.

“She stepped up and did what she needed to,” Bucklin head coach Stephen Hokanson said. “It is one of those things I think where we are a team where if you start to focus on one person, we got some other people that can play."

“It is one of those things I think where we are a team where if you start to focus on one person, we got some other people that can play.
“Being a freshmen, she is picking up the high school game now.  Figuring out what she can and cannot do. … The shots she took today, were good shots, probably the best she has taken all year.”
Hokanson said the key to the game was making adjustments and executing, and his team did just that.
“You have to know where (Kassy) Ptacek and (Kara) Minor are,” Hokanson said. “They were putting one in the short corner and we were not moving over fast enough. So we adjusted to put a post over there where they needed to be and be aware of where those two are all the time on the floor.”
In the first quarter, Minneola’s Minor and Ptacek combined for 13 of Minneola’s 15 points. Minor and Ptacek would combine to score 12 in the remaining three quarters.
Minor finished the game with 13 to lead the Wildcats and Ptacek had 12.
Bucklin will play the No. 4 ranked Class 1A Division I South Central Timberwolves Thursday at 7:30 in the semifinals.
Ptacek and Minor combined for the Wildcats first 10 points and they got out to a 10-6 lead. Ptacek drained an NBA 3 at the buzzer to give Minneola a 15-10 lead after one quarter.
“Their offense they were running, was getting open shots for Minor, and so we had to make sure we knew where she was,” Hokanson said. “We adjusted and they got to where they did not have (what they needed).”
Bucklin started the second quarter on a 9-2 run and Hood gave Bucklin a lead with just under four minutes left before halftime with a 3-pointer.
Bucklin walked into the half with a 24-21 lead.
Bucklin outscored the Wildcats 12-4 in the third quarter to pull away. Hood had a 3-point play with a made free throw and AJ Cossell sank another free throw to give Bucklin a 36-24 lead, its largest of the night.
“We needed to play well and we did,” Hokanson said.
