The Dodge City Lady Conquistadors had a horrid first half in their Jayhawk West showdown against the Butler Lady Grizzlies, but a defensive stand in the second half was a silver lining in a 64-47 road loss.
The Lady Conqs trailed 48-17 at halftime to Butler, with the Lady Grizzlies outscoring the visitors 33-7 in the final 11 minutes of the first half. Dodge City (7-15, 1-7) was 7-of-20 from the field in the first half, but committed 14 turnovers; while Butler (22-of-42) had two players score in double figures for them in the first half: Ashlee Ivy with 13 and Samantha Satterlee with 10.
The second half saw Dodge City stay in better control, especially on defense.
The Lady Conqs outscored the Lady Grizzlies 30-16 in the second half, many points coming from 12 Butler turnovers after intermission, with the host squad shooting 7-of-26 from the field. Kesha Buckner scored seven of her 11 points in the second half in her second game back from an injury, while Rodeshia Mouton scored all six of her points after intermission.
Kelli Tolar also scored 11 points to share the lead in scoring for Dodge City.
Ashlee Ivy only scored two points in the second half for Butler (17-5, 5-3).
This is the last time the Lady Conqs will travel to Eldorado for a Jayhawk West contest. Butler moves over to the Eastern Division starting next season. Dodge City and Butler will play each other in March for the final time as division foes.
Dodge City's next game will be another road contest at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hutchinson against the nationally top-ranked Lady Dragons.
