The Dodge City Lady Demons knew they were going to have to play good defense for any chance to beat the state-ranked Manhattan Indians. Unfortunately, the Lady Demons couldn't find their shooting touch to help leading scorer Katrina Roenfeldt in a 49-30 loss Friday night at the DCHS Fieldhouse. Dodge City shot 11-of-47 from the field (23.4 percent) with Roenfeldt scoring 16 and no other player scoring more than three. DCHS girls basketball head coach Kelley Snodgrass said she couldn't fault the effort, especially on defense; but the scoring has to improve for the Lady Demons (1-1) to succeed. "We were in the game in the first half and we left it all on the court, but we couldn't get shots to fall," Snodgrass said. "When you shoot 23 percent from the field, it really doesn't matter what you do defensively. "We got our hands on balls and got deflections. When the shots don't fall, it gets frustrating." Darby Price scored 15 and Caroline Ballard added 12 for the Class 6A-No. 6 Lady Indians (2-0). The first quarter saw neither team take any offensive control in the game with the score tied at 7-7 by the end of the stanza. Manhattan scored the first six points of the second quarter, but the Lady Demons closed out the half with a run to cut the deficit to 18-15. The margin stayed three early in the third quarter until the Lady Indians closed out the stanza with an 11-point run to lead 33-19 with one period left to go. Manhattan extended the lead to 49-24 midway through the final quarter to complete the victory. The Lady Demons return to action today with a 1 p.m. contest against Junction City. The Lady Bluejays faced Great Bend on Friday. MANHATTAN (49) -- Amara Ehie 2, Savannah Thaemert 7, Par McNair 9, Caroline Ballard 12, Darby Price 15, Kylie James 4. Totals 20-57 9-13 49.
