Metropolitan Coffee in Hutchinson makes a great destination for live music.

If you’re looking for great atmosphere and live music, look no further than Hutchinson … and Metropolitan Coffee. Best of all, it’s live music without the alcohol.

The Met, as many call it, has been around since 2002. I make it there three or four times a year but wish I had time to visit more often.

The current owners, Jim and Myra Kitson, have expanded the business’ drink and food offerings since taking over in 2008. Most Friday and Saturday nights will find someone performing there, and the walls feature works, which change monthly, from local artists. Visit the Metropolitan website,, to see what’s on tap.

If you’re not a coffee drinker, like myself, there are plenty of alternatives, like flavored milk steamers, hot chocolate, and hot cider in the winter or cremosas and smoothies in warmer weather. The establishment recently began selling various flavors of single-serving oatmeal, so you can have a fairly healthy snack anytime you visit. I recently enjoyed the pumpkin pie spice oatmeal.

Of course, you can also indulge in one of the many delicious pastries and other treats that the Met features daily.

Metropolitan Coffee, just a bit further east of the 99th Meridian than Pratt, is a great place to take an unhurried break from a day spent shopping in Hutchinson—or make it your destination for a date or night out with friends.

Jim and Myra do a great job of supporting Kansas musicians and artists, and, subsequently, it feels good to support their business by attending a concert and purchasing a beverage or two with a pastry or flavored oatmeal. The establishment also offers a lunch menu featuring hot soups and bread bowls from fall through spring.

The Met is open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Friday; 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday; and, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. It’s located at the southwest corner of 17th and Lorraine in Hutchinson.
