The annual Fall Preview Watermelon Scrimmage was the kick off to the United Way of Dodge City's fundraising campaign this past Friday night at Memorial Stadium with a tailgate celebration.

The scrimmage was a perfect opportunity to get the community involved and to kick off the Red Demons sports season, according to Gayle Ausmus, executive director, United Way of Dodge City.

"I think it’s about bringing together all the people that care about our community," said Ausmus. "United Way’s annual campaign is a vital part of the organizations work, supporting 16 programs that promote education, financial stability and health."

The community was able to enjoy hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and a drink during the 13th year of the event.

Support to the United Way goes towards such programs as Building a Healthier Community, Leader Reader Program, FamilyWize and 2-1-1.

Dodge City Red Demons football starts the 2018 season this Friday at Memorial Stadium against the Haysville-Campus Colts at 7 p.m.
