Over the past two years, Dr. Kristin Shields has been a valuable partner of Western Plains Physician Practices.
It is a combination of both sadness and excitement that we announce Shields’ acceptance into Doctors Without Borders.
Doctors Without Borders is an independent, international humanitarian medical non-governmental organization that provides medical aid where it is needed most.
They provide medical assistance to individuals who are affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or even exclusion from health care. Their team is entirely made up of health professionals.
"Dodge City was a great place to live and a great place to work," Shields said. "It has been a privilege to be able to practice the full spectrum of both of my medical specialties that I wouldn’t have had a chance to do anywhere else."
Dr. Shields’ medical specialties included both obstetrics and gynecology, and critical care.
"This opportunity allows me to do what I love most, helping those in need," she said.
Shields’ first voyage is Bangladesh, where Doctors Without Borders runs a medical facility and clinic close to Kutupalong in Cox’s Bazar district.
They offer comprehensive basic and emergency health care, as well as inpatient and laboratory services to Rohingya refugees and the local community.
In response to the influx of refugees in Cox’s Bazar, Doctors Without Borders has significantly increased its presence in the area, with vastly expanded operations offering water, sanitation, and medical services to the refugees.
"Thank you for letting me be a part of you and your family’s lives. I’ve sincerely enjoyed my time in Dodge City and have loved serving each and every one of you," said Shields.
While Shields will be greatly missed, we also understand that this decision is one that will be best for our dear colleague. We are very grateful for the outstanding care she’s provided to the community of Dodge City.
Please know that our commitment to your health care is strong and we will continue to provide you with the care at the same practice location.
Dr. Samir Shaath, who has been a prominent member of the community for 24-plus years will continue to see her patients.
Melanie Emily, APRN will also be assisting Shaath with gynecological services.
The office phone number will remain the same, 620-371-6900, and the location, 112 Ross Blvd. in Dodge City.
Please remember that our staff is ready to answer your questions and will provide assistance as you make your next appointment.
As always, we are honored to be your health partner.
We would like to thank Dr. Shields’ for her dedicated commitment to the community and to Western Plains Physician Practices and wish her the very best in all of her upcoming endeavors.
