If you didn't have lunch or dinner plans for Thursday, the VFW has you covered.

From 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m., the VFW will be hosting the annual Meals on Wheels fundraiser soup event.

According to Dodge City Meals on Wheels treasurer Dan Reichenborn, Meals on Wheels is a program of the retired school employees from the Dodge City area.

"Expenses are up a bit this year due to purchases of new kitchen equipment and repairs of older equipment," Reichenborn said. "The funds raised at the annual soup lunch and supper are used to keep the program going.

"Last year the number in attendance was down a bit but I believe it was because the weather was warmer than usual and maybe not conducive to a good bowl of hot chili or beef stew."

The food options will be a choice of soup served with a drink and a slice of pie.

"The food is always good but the camaraderie and the coming together of the community to support this program is really inspiring," Reichenborn said.

Reichenborn added, "The Meals on Wheels program provides nutritious meals for shut-in seniors. The program also delivers meals for the weekends and emergency shelf meals that can be used in case of a weather emergency when meals may not be able to be delivered.

"The volunteers that deliver the meals each weekday also serve as a check to see if these seniors are feeling well."

Lunch and dinner is $6 with children under four years old free.
