The non-profit Special Military Active Recreational Travelers club for military veterans is seeking to start a chapter in Dodge City.

According to its website, SMART brings military veterans, and their families together to share camaraderie, travel, camping, and support to our veterans. All active, retired, and honorably discharged veterans from U.S. and Canadian Armed Forces, interested in recreational travel, and sharing the camaraderie developed in the military are welcome. This includes; Reserve, National Guard, Air National Guard, Coast Guard, and also USPHS, and NOAA.

"It takes five rigs to start a chapter," said SMART member Sherwin Stielow of Russell. "Kansas is one of seven states that is part of the north midwest region."

Along with traveling across the country, the SMART campouts also feature games, socializing, sharing potluck meals on weekend camp-outs, monthly luncheons, involvement in community activities, volunteering at veterans' homes and hospitals.

SMART members also volunteer and are involved in organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Toys for Tots and Sew Much Comfort among others.

"You don't have to have a fancy RV to join either," Stielow said. "A pup tent will work too."

For more information on SMART, visit their website at and to become a member, email Stielow at or call 800-354-7681.

"I met with the people at the Gunsmoke RV Park and they said they would be willing to hold the meetings there," Stielow said. "So if people contact me then we can come out and get things set up."
