Wright Park zoo will be closed on the morning of Thursday April 25, and will open to the public at 1 p.m. that afternoon.
This closure is for a scheduled hoof trimming for the two longhorn steers, and all staff will be needed to assist the veterinarian.
Due to the size of the steers, who both weigh around 1,700 pounds, sedation will be required for the procedure for the safety of the staff.
Zoo guests can potentially cause distractions for staff which can lead to a safety issue during the procedure.
Though there are risks of complications when sedating animals, the risks are low.
