The National Speech and Debate Association West Kansas District has named Dodge City High School forensics coach, Johnny Dunlap, as its New Coach of the Year.

The announcement came during the National Speech and Debate Association district qualifier when Garden City High School coach Russ Tidwell recognized Dunlap.

"This is a great honor I did not expect," Dunlap said. "It’s wonderful to be recognized by my peers for work I really believe in.

"These talented students deserve nothing short of the highest level of competition and the dedication from me to push them to be better competitors."

Tidwell added that the DCHS forensics program was "turned around" compared to previous years, making it one of the one of the most competitive forensics programs in the state.

"Dunlap’s dedication to compete at the highest level all season and the surprising success his team has enjoyed this year as they showed up to tournaments they’d never been to," Tidwell said in a press release. "Brought home a surprising number of medals and trophies."
