In a news release from Wright Park Zoo, it was announced that "Brutus" the bison bull died on Friday.

According to zoo officials, "Brutus" had shown signs of health issues related to age.

"While these issues were being successfully managed by zoo staff, his health began to decline earlier in the week rapidly," said head zoo keeper, Hannah Schroeder. "It was decided by the zoo and veterinary staff that it was time to say goodbye and let him go with dignity."

It is estimated that "Brutus" was 25 years old who was born at Wright Park Zoo in the late 1990s.

"He has been a great joy for staff and guests alike and sired over 10 calves in his lifetime," Schroeder said. "His memory will be preserved at Boot Hill Museum, where a part of 'Brutus' will be displayed to continue to educate visitors for years to come."

Staff will be monitoring the herd closely as they adjust to the death.

"Brutus" is survived by the bison cow, "Aster," and two new additions, "Thorn" and "Berry."

Schroeder added, "we thank you for your support during this difficult time. 'Brutus' will be greatly missed by everyone."
