A new scam struck the area of Ford County recently, this time through an email.
On Monday, Ford County Sheriff Bill Carr released a warning of a scam that was used from a hacked email account requesting the person receiving the email send an iTunes gift card to the scammer.
"The email I received said, 'Hello Bill, Am sorry for bothering you with this mail, I need to get an iTunes gift card for my niece, Its her birthday but i can't do this now because I'm currently traveling and i tried purchasing online but unfortunately no luck with that. 'Can you get it from any store around you? I'll pay back as soon as i am back. Kindly let me know if you can handle this. Await your soonest response,'" Carr said.
The email was sent from what appeared to be a member of the Dodge City community.
Upon further inspection of the email, it appeared to be a legitimate email sent from the Dodge City citizen, according to others who received the same email.
"This is a scam," Carr said. "Do not purchase and send cards or money. Be extra vigilant in every email you receive because you never know."
For further assistance or questions, contact law enforcement immediately, Carr said.
