Fernando Amezquita, 43, of Hays, was arrested on July 7 after authorities said they found about 6 pounds of methamphetamine in his vehicle.

According to Ford County Sheriff Bill Carr, the arrest was coordinated by efforts from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Ford County Sheriff’s Office, the Hays Police Department and the Ellis County Sheriff’s Office.

The arrest occurred about 1 a.m. along US-56 highway west of Dodge City.

"Amezquita was arrested for distribution of methamphetamine, and three counts of child endangerment, since his three young children were passengers in the vehicle at the time of his arrest," Carr said. "He was then booked into the Ford County Jail."

Amezquita's bond was set at $150,000.

"This operation represented a coordinated law enforcement effort to combat drug violence and reduce the accessibility of illegal drugs impacting southwest Kansas," Carr said.

The bust comes on the heels of arrests made in June in which nearly 70 pounds of methamphetamine was seized on US-54 highway just east of Bucklin in Ford County.
