About 5:05 p.m. Tuesday at the Garnett Road Railroad crossing, a BNSF train collided with a John Deere tractor occupied by Bernard Stegman, 59, of Spearville.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Stegman died as a result of the collision.

The highway patrol said the crash occurred 150 feet south of Highway 50 at milepost 134, or about 3 miles southwest of Spearville.

According to the crash log, the John Deere tractor was northbound on Garnett Road and failed to stop at the railroad crossing and was struck by the Engine No. 72 BNSF train.

Occupants of the train were conductor Chad Roush, 34, of Stafford; engineer Jase Wedel, 44, of Wichita; and brakeman Dylan Neal, 34, of Sedgwick.
