It’s fair to say stay-at-home-mother Lydia Middlebrooks likes to “Sneak-A-Peek” inside presents before its time to unwrap them.
The mom of three is a fan of Sneak-A-Peek Imaging Studio, 204 E. Frontview Street in Dodge City.
Middlebrooks plans to deliver her fourth child Timothy in a Wichita hospital, but it is here, with small-business owner and ultrasound technician Stevie Garcia, where she prefers to be when she peeks into the personality of her babies before they are born via 2D/3D/4D ultrasounds.
The images are so detailed that Middlebrooks said she knew her, “second child Jessica looked so much like her big sister Yelena even before she was born.”
She invited the Daily Globe to join her children and a close friend along for a recent appointment to sneak a peek at Timothy.
“Look!” friend Mediah Gasca said to big-brother Jason, “he looks just like you!”
The friends sat together on a big couch in front of a 70-inch TV screen and a wall-sized projection of the ultrasound in progress.
“Other places are so hard sitting,” Middlebrooks said amidst it all. “But feel how soft this bed is. Here it’s very family-friendly and I’m comfortable bringing my kids.”
Sneak-A-Peek is a non-diagnostic studio in which Garcia performs elective ultrasounds but does not provide medical diagnosis.
Rather, the business is a feel-good service for expectant mothers that offers keepsake pictures, hand-made baby booties, gender-reveal notions and even a variety of stuffed animals that clients can bring to life with a recording of their baby’s heart-beat.
The studio has a sunlight-bright lobby in front of a private, peaceful space built for people to be comfortable and personal together.
“We try to make it fun,” Garcia said. “We have the best clients. You can feel the love they have for each other and for their babies. You feel like you know that baby.”
She interpreted the live-action and orange-colored four-dimensional imagery of the unfinished Middlebrooks for the crowd: “Timothy has a sweet personality,” Garcia said.
She has plans to expand the services of her business to include a kids corner and front-end boutique. She is now hiring to fill a customer service position.
“This is my baby,” the working mom said proudly of her business.
