Shelter Insurance Co. recently made a company-wide announcement to lower rates for a majority of its automobile insurance policyholders.

The decision to reduce rates was made based on the fact that fewer people have been driving during the COVID-19 pandemic, and thus there have been fewer accidents.

Overall, the impact for Shelter Insurance customers is 5.0%; however, the additional decrease for individual customer is contingent upon policy coverage, geography and individual profile and loss experience.

"In Kansas, it’s a little bit higher, it’s about 5.7%," said Frank Thompson, Shelter Insurance vice president of marketing.

Shelter Insurance’s strong financial position will facilitate the rate reduction while retaining the appropriate levels of premium reserves to pay current claims and maintain general surplus dollars that can pay future claims from major storms or other disasters.
