Despite trailing for most of the game, the South Central Timberwolves boys basketball team came back to beat the Hodgeman County Longhorns 51-42 Friday night.

They’ll face the South Gray Rebels at 8 p.m. Saturday night.

The Longhorns led 25-15 at the end of the first half, and 35-26 at the end of the third quarter, but in the fourth quarter, shots stopped falling for Hodgeman County.

“We knew what we had to do, we just weren’t executing,” South Central head coach Roe Macias said. “We had a talk between third and fourth quarter, started executing a little more, shots started falling some, just a combo of things.”

The quarter started with a Hodgeman County basket to make the score 37-28, but a South Central 3-pointer, a couple of free throws, followed by another 3-pointer cut the lead to just one point with 4:48 left in the fourth quarter.

Two free throws by South Central senior Hunter Huck tied the score and gave the Timberwolves the lead with 3:27 remaining. T-Wolves sophomore Owen Alexander then made a one of two a little later and two of two after a Hodgeman County miss.

Hodgeman misses doomed them down the stretch, and that included at the free-throw line, where the Longhorns were 3 of 6 in the fourth quarter.

South Central was led by Alexander, who had a team-high 14 points, then Huck who had 13 and senior Dalton Morehead who had nine.

The Longhorns were led by senior Trevor Morgan had a game-high 21 points, followed by freshman Isaac Salmans and senior Jacob Salmans who each had six.

Morgan was especially problematic for the Timberwolves. He had 17 of the Longhorns’ 25 first-half points.

“We knew they had a couple of guys that could change the game,” Macias said. “Trevor just came out and was just phenomenal the first half.”

With the loss, Hodgeman County will take on Spearville at 4 p.m. today.
