After graduating three seniors last year, the Dodge City High School girls golf team returns three with varsity experience.
Junior Ella Friess and seniors Breanna Galindo and Olivia Gregg all return from last year’s varsity team.
“We’re halfway there with varsity experience,” Red Demons head coach Jim Mapel said. “We’re looking obviously to just fill those other three spots, and we’ve got good young kids in here, we’ve got some sophomores that are doing pretty well and we’ve got a pretty good freshman group.”
Like other high school teams throughout the area, the team is just getting its fall practices and things going, but Mapel said they will see who can step up and fill those spots.
“These are good kids,” Mapel said. “They’re really working on their games and some of ‘em are really learning how to play, but it’s been a good start.”
There really isn’t any particular tournament Mapel said the team was looking forward to, because each offers them the chance to learn and grow.
“Every tournament’s a little bit different competition-wise and difficulty-of-course-wise, it’s just the way our schedule always is,” Mapel said. “So we’re looking forward to playing in Hays that first tournament and it’s always a challenge, that golf course, for everyone.”
The Red Demons open their season with an invitational at Smoky Hill Country Club in Hays on Aug. 27.
“It’s in two weeks, so we’re gonna have to kind of get going and see how we handle that first one,” Mapel said. “I look forward to every tournament, I really do.”
They return home Sept. 6. That tournament is scheduled for 1 p.m. and takes place at Mariah Hills.
