The Dodge City Red Demons advanced to the Regional finals with a 3-0 over the Wichita West Pioneers Tuesday night.
There was some back-and-forth play, but the Red Demons had most of the scoring opportunities.
One of the major exceptions came with about 16:43 left in the first, when a Wichita West shot went off the bottom of the crossbar and out.
Red Demon junior Marco Raue opened the scoring with 36:49 left in the first half, running near the attacking-right sideline and shooting across this body into the far side of the net to give the Demons a 1-0 lead.
It was one of many such runs he had that resulted in scoring opportunities for the Red Demons.
“He’s earned his spot,” Red Demon head coach Saul Hernandez said. “He’s been consistent, he’s been dangerous on the side and he’s been continually doing his job. That’s why he’s earned the starting position.”
That was key Tuesday night.
“He was the spark for tonight, and we just want more players to step up like he has,” Hernandez said.
With 7:30 left in the opening half, senior Alexis Calderon tipped in a ball that bounced around in and off multiple players in the Wichita keeper’s box, giving the Red Demons a 2-0 lead.
Senior Alexis Alvarez scored on a penalty kick with 9:18 left in the game to give the Red Demons a 3-0 lead that stood up as the final score.
With the win, the Red Demons will host the Regional Championship Game Thursday at 6 p.m. in Dodge City’s Memorial Stadium. They will play Haysville-Campus in the game.
