The Dodge City Red Demons boys and girls basketball teams opened their seasons with games in Junction City against the Blue Jays.

Here’s how each team did:

Boys team falls despite Sowers’ 24, Johnson’s double-double

The Blue Jays outscored the Red Demons 23-16 in the first quarter and 23-15 in the third, beating the Demons by a score of 87-71.

For the Blue Jays, AJ Dickerson scored 23 points, Javon George scored 16, Qua’vez Humphreys scored 12 and Aaron Hamilton scored 11.

The Blue Jays outrebounded Dodge City 45-32, and outshot the Red Demons from the field 55.6 percent to 42.6 percent.

For the Red Demons, junior John Johnson had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. and senior Noah Sowers had 24 points, seven rebounds and a game-high nine assists. Johnson registering three steals and Sowers with two. Sowers and junior Beau Foster each had one block.

Red Demons girls team cruises through Lady Jays

The Dodge City Red Demons girls basketball team dominated Junction City Friday night, outscoring the Jays 12-4 in the first quarter, and 17-0 in the third to beat Junction City 55-22.

The Blue Jays were led by Lucy Ramirez who had six points, and Mellana Davis who had five points and tied a game-high seven rebounds.

Sophomore Kisa Unruh was a force in the game for the Red Demons, finishing with a game-high 14 points, including 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. She also tied a game-high with seven rebounds, blocked a game-high four shots and had two steals.

Junior Chidera Okoro shot 6 of 7 from the field and scored 12 points, also grabbing three steals. Freshman Amaya Perez had six points and seven rebounds while recording two steals.

Sophomore Lauren Gleason had a game-high seven assists, more than the total of three by the Blue Jays. She also had one blocked shot and five steals, complemented by three points. She didn’t turn the ball over once.

Both teams travel to take on Newton tonight. The girls game is scheduled for 6 p.m., with the boys scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
