Despite getting outscored 31-17 in the final quarter of play, the Dodge City Red Demons boys basketball team narrowly escaped Newton with a 79-76 win Tuesday night.

Senior Noah Sowers had a team-high 19 points, and tied a game-high six assists, for the Red Demons who entered the final quarter up 62-45, but a furious rally in the fourth nearly caused it to slip away. The Red Demons boys team moves to 1-1, and plays again Friday inside the Dodge City Field House, where they host Maize.

On the girls side, the Red Demons girls team fell to 1-1, losing to Newton 53-40. The Red Demons only scored 12 points in the first half, but were led overall by sophomore Kisa Unruh, who had a career-high 19 points, the most scored by a Red Demon girls basketball player since junior Chidera Okoro scored 19 in the team's Feb. 20, 2018 loss to Hays.

The Red Demons girls team hosts Maize at 6 p.m. Friday. The boys game is scheduled to start afterward, at about 7:30 p.m.
